Question:
I have access to a 8000 BTU window air conditioner, I
can't use it due to condo rules. Is it possible to make a portable air
conditioner from a standard window type air conditioner. Could I not make a
shroud for the back of the window air conditioner, drill some holes for
condensation and ventilation and add a exhaust tube with a fan.
Would this work, if so how much efficiency can I expect out of the unit. If
not, why not and what is it in the design of a portable air conditoner that
makes them work
Answer:
yes, you can, but it will be a project. There exist floor-standing
room A/Cs that breathe and vent condenser-cooling air through hoses to the
outside and vaporize evaporator condensate for discharge as vapor with the
heat out the hose. You can do it, I'll bet, although compressor and fan
noise, normally outside, will be inside, and the unit probably won't cool as
well since the outside air volume is restricted
Condo rules are there for a reason so be careful and probably consult your
association or board first. Window/wall units are not allowed in condo's due
to unsightly looks. They want to maintain the architectural structure of the
condo. It isn't whether it will work but first will the association allow
it.
